In Florida, Bartonella infections are more prevalent than Lyme disease, although both are highly underreported.

Bartonella in Florida

Bartonella henselae, the bacterium responsible for cat scratch disease, is notably prevalent in Florida. 16.4% of cats in Florida were found to be infected with Bartonella spp. We have always heard our pets can get us sick, this isn’t something to take lightly. Bartonella transmission from pets is extremely underreported and misdiagnosed. It is important to understand the transmission risks between Bartonella and Lyme disease.

Lyme Disease in Florida

In Florida, Lyme disease is most commonly transmitted through the bite of infected ticks, specifically Ixodes scapularis, also known as the black-legged tick or “deer tick.” There are some important factors to keep in mind if you feel like you have been exposed. Timeliness is critical, the longer you wait to address a potential concern the worse off you will be. Since Florida has warm temperatures all year, ticks can be a potential risk at any time.

Key Points About Transmission in Florida

  1. Tick species
    • These ticks are found in some parts of Florida, particularly in wooded areas, grassy fields, and areas with deer populations.

  2. How transmission occurs
    • Lyme bacteria are transmitted when an infected tick bites and stays attached for usually 36–48 hours.
    • Shorter attachments (<24 hours) are less likely to transmit Lyme disease.

  3. Seasonal risk
    • Tick activity in Florida peaks in spring and early summer, but ticks can be active year-round in warmer regions.

Bottom line:

In Florida, the most common way people get Lyme disease is from the bite of an infected black-legged tick in wooded or grassy areas, not from animals or person-to-person contact.

Conclusion

While both Bartonella and Lyme disease are present in Florida, Bartonella infections are more prevalent, especially among animals. Lyme disease is less common but still a concern, with underreporting likely contributing to its perceived rarity.

Ticks and tick-borne illnesses are on the rise in Florida due to multiple factors.

If you have concerns about tick or flea-borne illnesses in Florida, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for appropriate testing and guidance.
