What is lab testing?

Lab testing refers to drawing or gathering a sample of blood, urine, or cells for analysis in a laboratory facility. At Northeast Florida Internal Medicine, lab testing occurs in the office, so you don’t have to go to an external lab for answers. 

What does lab testing involve?

Lab testing procedures differ with the type of sample you’re providing. With urine samples, you’ll visit the bathroom and provide your sample in a cup. 

With blood samples, the team obtains the sample through a quick blood draw from an arm vein. Some blood tests may only require a finger prick. 

Other types of lab testing may require just a few swipes of your nasal cavity or the back of your throat with a sterile swab, for example, COVID and flu testing. Some sexually transmitted disease (STD) tests require a swab of the genitals. 

As soon as you provide the sample, it goes to the on-site lab, where the expert technicians perform the appropriate tests. 

Once tests are ready, which often only takes a few minutes, the lab gives your provider a detailed analysis. You’ll discuss the results with your provider and will have the chance to ask questions. Then, if necessary, they help you address any issues indicated by the lab tests.

How should I prepare for lab testing?

If you need to prepare for your lab testing in any way, the team lets you know a few days ahead of time. While most tests don’t need any prep, you do need to fast for certain blood tests.
